It’s one of the paradoxes of Globalisation: Shopping gets more and more difficult. It’s not everyday shopping at home I am talking about, but shopping abroad as a way of getting to know a foreign culture: Souvenirs off the beaten path and beyond the usual kitsch avalanche, gifts for those at home, local food and country specific products. Supermarkets and shop chains are expanding worldwide, H&M, Zara, Louis Vuitton & co. are available almost everywhere, hence in Prague as well, kicking out the local businesses that can’t afford the outrageous rents in central shopping streets. The sophisticated traveller (not the one with the big wallet, but the one with the good taste) should not waste precious time looking desperately for something „special“, unusual, typical, in a sea of mainstream shops.
